Goals of Code Enforcement

  • To preserve the quality and value of public and private property

  • To eliminate conditions which threaten the life, health, safety, and general welfare of the public

  • To maintain a quality standard of living for all who live and work in our community

Duties of the Code Enforcement Section

  • To monitor public compliance with the city's municipal code and the city's adopted building codes

  • To accept and process all building permit applications

  • To review building plans and specifications

  • To perform inspections in accordance with the city's adopted building codes

  • To investigate and pursue compliance when a violation of the municipal code or the adopted building codes is reported and confirmed

  • To issue administrative notices, stop work orders, citations, correspondence, etc., as needed to ensure compliance

  • To oversee city abatement when necessary

  • To obtain and implement inspection warrants when necessary

  • To provide code enforcement staff assistance to the City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission

How to Obtain Code Enforcement Assistance

The city requires that all investigation requests/complaints be submitted on an official city investigation request / complaint form. Forms are available at City Hall. Forms can be completed by city staff over the phone. Upon request, the city will make every effort to keep a complainant's identity confidential.

How the Public can Help to Reduce the Need for City Code Enforcement

  • When considering new construction or changes regarding land use or construction, become familiar with the applicable municipal code and building codes; and, voluntarily comply with permit requirements and all local, state, and federal regulations that may apply to your situation.

  • Contact the city to obtain information regarding regulations related to zoning, land use, construction, set backs, and encroachment in public rights of way.

  • Maintain all buildings and other structures in a safe, sanitary and structurally sound condition.

  • Maintain all properties in a safe, sanitary and well kept condition; to include, cutting grass and weeds on a regular basis.

  • Store all trash and trash containers out of public view from any street, and so as not to be offensive to neighbors or the general public.
